first I knew of your dad he lived in that hobbled together house on the main road
when we still lived in the back woods but your Aunt Tillie being my best friend and
your dad being one of her 6 brothers I was bound to catch a glimpse of him now
& then but truth be told in Sunday School when we were only 5 or 6 years old
I hardly paid him any mind
then when we were 10 or so the fact that he spoke to Ada May (my very own sister)
but ignored me impressed itself upon my mind & I began to see what she saw in
him but he never spoke to me only Ada May & I got it in my head the reason he
liked her was that tam she wore to church plaid wool & hand-knitted tilted to one
side on her head (course now I wonder where did she get the money for such a thing?)
then one day it came to me all of sudden-like that he might speak to me if I wore
that tam but I knew Ada May would tell on me to daddy if I took it so for a while
I just let things be but
by the time I was 13 I knew me and your dad were meant to be together forever &
we started dating which sounds young nowadays but keep in mind my mama married
age 14 and had her first child a year later and of course as you know my daddy was
against us marrying and if it’d been down to him we’d never married since he
& your dad’s pa had a long-standing feud so when me and your dad turned 16 we
drove across the state line where it was legal for us to marry & we been together right
up till now & I don’t know what to do next him cold in a grave
