Where There’s Smoke There's Breakfast

The morning Edgar reported for active duty,
Pauline fixed a lopsided tower
of fluffy eggs in a skillet on his stovetop
lit beneath by the fickle lick of newsprint and twigs
before the pilot light snapped out—.
He’d gathered this firewood last night
then rolled filmy paper

into diminishing smoke rings.
